The beginning of this sentence is taken from the proverb "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger," and the latter half of the sentence takes advantage of the unexpected change of tense and sudden conclusion to create a humourous effect. Clearly it worked, considering the number of "like"s it has received.
