A NIGHTTIME CONVERSATION
Gebrix-Fox & Goober**
That night, the group settled in around a fire.
Most drifted to sleep.
But Goober couldn’t.
They sat alone near a small lantern, fiddling with a cracked book they’d scavenged.
Gebrix-Fox noticed immediately.
They padded over softly, tail of their hoodie dragging a little on the floor.
“Mind if I sit?”
Goober shook their head, smiling gently. “Please.”
Gebrix lowered themselves beside them, legs crossed.
“You’re quieter than usual,” Gebrix said.
“Even for you.”
Goober stared at the dusty pages of the book.
“I guess I’m… overwhelmed? Everything out there—”
They gestured toward the wasteland.
“—it doesn’t feel real yet. And the bunker… it felt like it was swallowing us.”
Gebrix’s ears twitched sympathetically.
“You kept everyone together, though. Even when you were scared.”
Goober shrugged.
“I didn’t really do much.”
“That’s not true.”
Gebrix spoke softly now, voice gentler than their usual sly tone.
“You kept talking.
You kept pulling people back from panic.
You calmed Shira.
You soothed Toady after that radio mimic thing.
And you comforted me.”
Goober blinked.
“I… did?”
Gebrix nodded.
“I thought I had everything handled. Thought nothing scared me.”
Their tail twitched.
“But that bunker? Every time metal creaked I thought something was coming. I hated it. And every time I got jumpy…”
They looked down.
“You were right there. Even when you were shaking too.”
Goober’s cheeks reddened.
“I just… didn’t want anyone to be alone.”
Gebrix smiled—small, warm, rare.
“That’s what makes you brave. Not that you weren’t scared.”
Their voice softened even more.
“But that you stayed with us anyway.”
Goober swallowed, stunned by the compliment.
“…Thanks.”
Gebrix nodded.
“Anytime.”
They sat together silently for a while, sharing the small warmth of the lantern and the distant crackling of the campfires.
Then Gebrix leaned against Goober’s shoulder lightly—barely a touch.
Not in a shy way.
Not in a dramatic way.
Just… comfort.
Goober didn’t move away.
And for the first time since the world fell apart, Goober truly felt safe.
