That happened to me once. I played a boxing game against a friend on the Sony PlayStation, having never played the game before which meant I had no idea what I was doing. So I used trial and error, seeing which non-directional button did what by pushing the first, second, third, and fourth buttons. 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4. I kept doing that and by doing that I won.
