It’s about ancestry and cultural identity. I’m pretty sure it’s only after a certain stage they get them too. Younger girls don’t get them. It’d be a rite of passage. Their ancestors live with them and guide them.
I once online attended a Maori funeral. They were Mormons, so it was a Mormon funeral inside, but they did send her off graveside with a haka (traditional dance- look up online). Both parts were quite moving. The young woman had died after complications from her mechanical heart pump. It happens too often. We keep losing heart warriors. The most recent was a guy who just didn’t wake up after transplant surgery. That was my prognosis when I first got sick and had the pump implanted. I went into transplant surgery knowing that I may not wake up, but I thought it was better than living with the pump.
