Yep. God can't remove much dross if we won't let Him touch us and people are less likely to do that if there lives have been very easy. Actually few who have super comfortable existences really see a need for God at all and those that do often can't give as much help to others outside of supplies or money because they can't identify enough with them and sadly many don't care to. Things are harder yet easier with a life full of hard stuff that has happened. Some get more than others but He knows what all can and can't bear. People tend to assume God won't give you more than you can bear and tie that into what we think or feel we can bear whether temptation or trauma, grief etc but in reality if it happens we can bear it or it wouldn't have been allowed to have happened to begin with. He alone knows what that is. I've had sexual abuse that started at 21 mo old and occult related stuff mostly was repressed but had He disallowed it then the good He has done in and through me couldn't have happened so it's worth it. This view on suffering doesn't happen overnight.
