6 is the variable a, 17 is the variable b, and 12 is the variable c

Plug in those into the formula to find the two solutions for x

you're given a thing that looks like [number]x² ± [number]x ± [number] = [another number]

b in this case would be x without the ², a would be the x with the ², and c would be the number before the equal sign without both the x and ²
