UK did a funny and required everyone to use their Government Issued ID to visit any website deemed NSFW or otherwise unsafe by parliament in the interest of protecting children, or thats the reason given by parliament. Naturally people started using VPNs to get around it and making a big stink out of it. Problem with the system was, you had to enter your ID (or picture of it) every time a page was visited. They were also going to definitely protect all of those nice IDs in a very “secure” location. Basically, it’s like if their TV license issue got worse but instead of funding BBC, it was to protect people from the internet (the supposed reason behind the act). And Naturally Parliament gets to decide what is safe and what is unsafe, so it could devolve very quickly if the government became a little more undemocratic. So, a petition was filed to have them relook at the bill because of government overreach, and because it’s not the US, citizens using petitions have actual weight to what goes on in the UK parliament, and they got over 100,000 signatures before the first week of the act going into affect was out, so it’s likely going to get removed due to general discontent.
