Yeah, problem is, those IDs need to be stored somewhere. And what better way to do that than a nice secure database that I’m sure no one will breach just to steal people’s identities since they are all in one place. Furthermore, it’s not like you enter it once and you’re done, it’s every single time you open the page. This is like the TV license they have there (yes you need a license to watch TV, or use a device that can stream anything in the UK) but worse. It’s not like the government gives you a random number you enter in, it’s a picture of your physical ID tied to everything from healthcare, insurance, to using government services.
It’s like the US government asking for your drivers license, social security number, or birth certificate whenever you tried to go to a site deemed unsafe. Like mf, learn to parent your children, not have the government do it for you.
Needless to say, VPN usage shot up in the UK to get around this. Currently theres a petition to have the UK parliament re-look at this issue due to government overreach lmao.
