When actually the powerful and -- probably -- mostly illegal drugging was the only reason Dementia-Man was able to pretend to function on occasion at all. Either they got the traditional dosage wrong that night or got the timing of it wrong.

If they could they would have made his dementia worse early on and handed Kamala the throne.

I think that was the original plan and then they finally got around to talking to Kamala and discovered that not only was she a total idiot but that she was too arrogant to be adequately controlled.
