The days leading up to May 4 saw escalating violence on and around campus, which primed the National Guard for a heightened response. On May 1, protests in downtown Kent turned violent, with students clashing with police, breaking windows, and setting bonfires. On May 2, the ROTC building on campus was set on fire, which prompted the deployment of nearly 1,000 National Guardsmen. Ohio Governor James Rhodes described rhe protestors as “the worst type of people that we harbor in America.”
