Don’t work a job you love because NO JOB will fulfill that no matter how good it is. Get a job that other people are willing to pay for. Because if people loved work, they would do it for free. You work because you’re compensated for it, nothing else.

I’m an idiot for saying “working my whole life is fine.” What the heck did I work FOR then? Work is a gift only in the fact that it’s much better than being homeless or forced into strict government programs. Lazy people work way harder in life for a lot less. So yes, I’m glad I live in a country that allows me to make my own wealth as an employee.

If people come out of retirement to work because they’re bored, that’s their choice. It’s not a principle anyone has to follow. And frankly, it often means they don’t have many hobbies.

The one good thing I said was get to a position where you don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck. Easier said than done obviously, but absolutely possible. And if you reach that, you’re not as dependent on your employer for your livelihood.

TLDR: Work is not life. Work is how you get the money to go live life.

What if I want a job I would both love and I get good pay for

Literally everyone wants that. But it doesn’t exist because again, if they truly loved it, they’d do it for free.

If I enjoy something that takes up a large part of life, I enjoy life

However, I still want to, well, get payed. How else would I live? Get another job that pays? Then what’s the point of a job I like?

If I’m living in a system where wages stay the same while everything costs more, I might as well enjoy what keeps me afloat.

Yes. I enjoy my sleep (I get up before my alarm a lot), I enjoy my life outside of work and my hobbies, and I give up 40 hours of my time per week to get compensated so I can go live my life.

Work is a tool to living the rest of your life when you’re not working. If you happen to love it on top of that, that’s great.

So you’re saying I’m cooked no matter what kind of job I pick

Precisely. You’re there to make money, not fulfill your life. The sooner you understand that, the further ahead you’ll get.

Underwater welding is an extremely dangerous job. The workers get very well-compensated because of it.

What if it’s your own business? You make money doing something you enjoy, and since you own the place you get to have a measure of control over what happens and how much money you receive.

People don’t start businesses because they love it. They do it because there’s demand for said business.

While you can control your pay, you can’t control the demand. If nobody wants what you’re selling, guess what. You’re not getting paid anyway.

Pretty negative view of working though isn’t it? Looking at like this, even though it may be true, will affect the quality of performance wouldn’t it? If you’re sad and feel weak all the time because you’re always thinking about how you don’t get any enjoyment and how you can’t get any enjoyment out of working, then you’re going to perform weakly, and then make less money. If money is what it’s about, then you should be happy about the money, and that happiness should make you enjoy working. Am I missing anything else?

Yes, that’s work. You’re doing stuff nobody wants to do but it needs to get done, so they’ll pay for it.

Even farmers don’t always want to work, but people need food to live and they’re willing to pay someone for it.

And shouldnt the happiness you feel from getting paid make enjoy it right? Unless of course, you’re underpaid, then I can understand why you’d hate working.

It may not make you love work per se, but it will definitely make the job worth it.

My happiness doesn’t directly come from working, it comes from knowing I’m making progress in paying my student loans off and saving money.
