Islamophobia is wrong, but I think the elite went against Mamdani mainly because he campaigned on socialism. And this fear of socialism is blown out of proportion because he's not going to replace the whole NYC economic structure or burn down Wall Street, but he is going to try to devise policies that solve affordability issues and interlock into a capitalist system despite carrying aspects of socialism.

Well, yes, but this is nothing new. Anything even a little bit left of center gets demonized as Scary Marxism; even centrist Democrats like Kamala Harris get accused of Communism -- which has the net effect of making them shift right to avoid putting off the voters.

Because our left is their center. And we have weird neocolonial issues around Israel; our government props up their beef with the Arab and Muslim nations around them as if it were defending a banana republic against the threat of Communism in the 70s.

Well, and entrenched nationalism: alas, we have no monopoly on that. Consider the way Jewish citizens were treated in the early 20th century in many of the democratic countries in Western Europe (see the Dreyfus Affair as an example). Now that most of those cultures have made their peace with Jewish citizens, they're feeling the same xenophobic anxiety about Muslims. . . . much like Americans.

The new world order consists of Iran and China being the global saviors, fighting American and Israeli oppression. Being victims of g*n*c*de is not an excuse to commit g*n*c*de.

I'm not sure that I see it that way. For my money, this century probably belongs to China and India, demographically, and the big question, of course, is what will happen in the global South. Will it become a bloc equivalent in power to the EU? Will it be so wracked by climate change that it breaks down through catastrophes and civil wars?

Don't know about India. Modi is conservative and has tried a friendly approach to Trump because India doesn't have the best relationship with China yet despite being a trading partner. But if Trump's actions alienate much of the world, even rivals of China like India and Japan will seek ties to Beijing to distance themselves from the chaos in Washington.

The naked xenophobia on display is pretty shocking. I see him being conflated with terrorists from the Middle East, described as a hardline Marxist, et cetera et cetera. Obviously he's terrifying to them.

(One X post I saw quoted suggests that the real reason he's terrifying is because he's 33 and already this successful. How does that make them feel about themselves?)

I saw a guy on the Politics stream claim that Islam should be banned in the US. And it had a concerning amount of upvotes despite that idea literally going against the first amendment and the principles our country was founded upon. The user claimed, and I quote, “Islam is death to America’s freedom” and promotes war/violence. My family comes from an Islamic country. I’m not religious at all, but some of my relatives are, and I could never imagine any of them being violent or intolerant in any way. Islam itself does not promote violence, nor does any religion. It’s certain religious groups or people that manipulate scripture and values to justify immoral acts. Ironically, much like those groups, we use Islamophobia to dehumanize Muslims and justify OUR discrimination/actions in the Middle East. Sorry that this isn’t entirely related to the meme, I just wanted to put this out there

It’s really sad how anyone who isn’t white is considered a foreigner, even if they were born here or lived here for most of their lives. Having ancestry in another country doesn’t make you less American and these “violent terrorist” stereotypes are only being used to target peaceful Palestinian protesters, because apparently freedom of speech only applies to some people now.
