They were always against oil, coal... fossil fuels, as well as nuclear. They were against any polluting and wasteful energy..
They favored solar and other renewable energy. Jimmy Carter even had solar panels installed on the roof of the White House. Reagan immediately had them removed upon taking office in order to show them how deep his onions were in oil companies, and discontinued renewable & conservation energy initiatives.
It really pained Reagan having to go along with anti acid rain measures, as well as action to stop the growing hole in the ozone.
