Palantir - The crystal balls in Lord of the Ring. They were originally meant for instant communication between Gondor, Orthnac Tower, and I can't remember the third location. Anyway Sauron stole the third one and used it to corrupt Saruman who stupidly used the one at Orthnac. Sauron drove the Steward of Gondar loony toons.
