An interesting fact is that the ancient Romans didn’t care about whether people worshipped Jesus Christ or not. There were many local gods among each ethnic group, and the Romans viewed (albeit wrongly) the monotheism of the Jews and Christians to be simply one God selected from many gods (in reality polytheism is a corruption of monotheism). The problem was Christians would not go to a temple of Caesar and offer incense once per year and say “Caesar is lord” which was viewed as disloyalty to Caesar. This was what caused most of the imperial persecutions for the first three centuries of Christianity.
