As much as I praise the game’s sandbox and physics, its combat leaves a lot to be desired.
The combat is just shoot or whack until the enemy’s health bar reaches zero. There’s no strategy, and it’s a missed opportunity.
For comparison, the combat in Dead Space is so fun because it’s about shooting limbs off of enemies. It requires precision and strategy to choose which limbs to cut off first. Similarly, Call of Duty zombies heavily encourages headshots by making them do triple damage and giving more points. Prey doesn’t have that.
On the bright side, there are a myriad of enemy types and weapons to choose from, but the combat is so monotonous that the little differences between enemies just evaporate because you fight them all in the same way.
