Unless your parents worked with or had friends in local law enforcement, it might have been nice to call their bluff and ask a teacher to request a wellfare check. The authorities tend to frown on child abuse and neglect.

Dude every single time I thought about doing something like that I also thought about how bad it would be for me to end up in the foster care system, cuz I know how much of a jumbled up mess that is,  which is why I don't usually say much about it

yeah ik, plus my parents both don't believe in child internet privacy laws. and my step-father has bluffed before that he has cameras in me and my siblings rooms, which i don't know if thats true or not because i feel like the guy should know that that is like super illegal and second he has  brought up stuff or mention things that I said to myself alone in my room when nobody was near me, before which makes me feel like it is true or he's just randomly guessing which is just incredibly coincidental,  so just in case he actually does have cameras in my f**king room  every so once in awhile when I'm alone I literally just say "if I ever find a camera in here I will report you and I don't care if I have to go to the foster care system then cuz that's super illegal"

Spy cameras are only illegal if they record audio, due to wiretapping laws. Recorded video and unrecorded audio are still allowed...depending on what they show.

Nanny cams don't require consent when used to record video in a private home. Otherwise it would defeat the purpose. Depending on the state, audio may violate eavesdropping laws.



I don't know what's worse: misuse of such cameras, or recorded footage of the misuse. Either way is despicable but at least a recording could be submitted as evidence.

Recording audio is illegal without consent. Recording video is legal without consent for purposes of surveiling common use areas but you're right, it's illegal to monitor people in areas where there's a reasonable expectation of privacy, like a bedroom or bathroom. Finding a camera in your bedroom would be damning evidence of invasion of privacy, whether or not it includes audio and whether or not the footage is recorded.
