Under what form of Sharia law or hadith are you using to determine if something is halal or haram?

I dunno, I know some things about Islam from recreational religious-studies (i study random stuff for fun) and know that different schools-of-thought for Sharia law and hadith exist, so what may be halal in one sect of Islam could actually be haram in another.

No, I'm actually a baptized and confirmed Roman-Catholic. I came to know what I know about Islam largely because I'm part of an online masculine self-improvement group and the like, and many of my friends and comrades on there are Muslim in one way or another, and I wanted to show respect for them as a good bro would by learning about the basics of Islam - that and I like to study religion and philosophy as a hobby alongside my science, technology, computer-coding and digital-creator shindig, so yeah.
