According to my dad, in the 90’s and early 2000’s, Route 66 was completely forgotten about. He lived in Albuquerque at the time where it went through, and nobody gave it a second look.
Ever since Cars came out in 2006, it’s become a historical monument on its own. Countless people traveling on it, buying merch for it, and visiting the old towns left behind by I-40.
