The problem was a that while individuals may learn to govern themselves and control their greed and other vices — present in workers as much as in the CEO of a firm or nobility— entire populations have never managed to do that. So there can never be a successful control by the entire populace. Then with all the means of production managed by a few unlimited corruption took place. Because of that, despite having some of the most fertile farmlands in the world, Soviet countries suffered many massive famines while crops rotted in the fields. Despite having abundant natural resources, the Soviet Union had to undergo five separate peristoikia sessions where they had to restructure their communism to get western capitalist societies to the nicest in them. Finally, they collapsed under their own weight after about 80 years. Ironically, capitalism has never collapsed.
