The Geneva Conventions started in Europe in 1859 and basically detailed the rules of war regarding prisoners of war, what is banned and what is allowed, and war regarding civilian targets. The ones established in the aftermath of WWII updated two treaties from 1929.
The most recent update to them came in 2005 with the addition of the third amendment protocol - that is, basically just further protecting field medics.
