They were!
I used to do bird gardening back behind the building where I used to live, and they were a bunch of stray cats which I used to feed as well. Anyways, in addition to the smell of food, one surefire way to attract their attention is freshly turned dirt.
Now when you plant something, of course you have to water it, but with a bunch of cats around, you have to make the surrounding area good and soggy, otherwise they will proceed to dig around. I mean they will start scratching away and then try to do their 'business' even if that ain't happening, then they'll throw some dirt back up and the next day, well, flopped over plant with a bunch of craters around it.
From the looks of the picture, that's fresh topsoil right out of the bag they put in the planter, so of course Pookie had to investigate,,,
