Have you heard the quote "Words have power"? If so, do you believe it? No? I'm not surprised.

The quote "Words have power" says that all words have power all the time. It says that the words of all people are equally powerful. It says that all the thousands of words in the dictionary are equally powerful. It also implies that anyone can talk their way into or out of anything. Maybe a small percentage of people really can talk their way into or out of anything, but the vast majority of us will someday discover that we can't. And when that happens to you, you will no longer believe "Words have power".

Here's the truth. Sometimes your words have power, and sometimes they don't. And if your words are taken as gospel by one person, they can be dismissed as garbage by another.

You know your words have power when:
-People care about what you're saying.
-People understand what you're saying.
-People believe what you're saying.
-People are impressed or satisfied with what you're saying.
-What you're saying gets you what you want (or close to what you want, or even better than what you want).

You wonder if your words have power if people ignore you, or if you suspect they're just pretending to believe you or agree with you or care about you.

When people give you one of these responses, that's when your words have no power over them:
"I don't get it."
"Absolutely not."
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
"I don't believe you."
"You're just a kid."
"That's no big deal."
"You have no right to complain."
"That'll never happen."
"Get off my back."
"Who are you to judge me?"
"Nobody cares what you think."
"Don't you talk to me like that!"
"Leave me alone!"
"I don't want to hear it!"

Do you agree with me or disagree with me? Have I misinterpreted the meaning of "Words Have Power"? Please let me know. I eagerly await your feedback.
