Yes, that's true. Lots of parents cannot afford to send their kids to private school. Lots of parents do not have the time or the ability to homeschool their kids either. But there are many suburban communities where parents either make enough money to send their kids to private school or have the time and ability to homeschool their kids. Communities like that should allow their residents to vote on a measure to abolish the public schools in their community. If I was a mayor or city manager or city council manager, I would want the residents under my jurisdiction to vote on the idea rather than just yank the rug from those who depend on public schools to teach their kids. And even if all the residents voted in favor of getting rid of public schools on election day in November, I would allow all students in the public schools to finish out their current school year.

There are many advantages to this idea. If private schools and homeschooling deliver better results than public schools, the residents of those communities would not have to pay for public schools. The mayors/city managers and city councils of those cities would have more time on their hands to resolve other issues. They could spend the money they used to spend on public schools on other things, like expanding library collections, repaving and repainting roads, upgrading emergency services, sprucing up parks and recreation centers, and so on. Or if they didn't see any need to improve those things, they could lower tax rates and encourage businesses and residents to move in. Oftentimes, 60-70% of property taxes are used to pay for public schools.

And if all the parents in a community decide to homeschool their kids instead of sending them to private schools, the land used for public schools could be used to build new houses or businesses and increase tax revenue, or to build new libraries, parks, recreation centers, police stations or fire stations..
