Let's say Disney tried to animate Cars in 2D.traditional animation using a team of 500 artists. Let's also say the running time is one hour and 55 minutes. If they decided to make each frame photorealistic and spend 30 hours making each frame, it would take them 6,696,000 man-hours to make 223,200 frames. Dvide 6,696,000 by 500, and you get 13,392 hours per person. If each person works 8 hours a day and 5 days a week (excluding holidays), the movie could be completed in six or seven years. And that's not including work that doesn't involve animation, such as script writing, voice recording, and editing.
But what if 30 hours isn't enough time to make a photorealistic painting? What if each frame requires 100 hours? (I say that because the example I gave you was in black and white.) Then the film could take over two decades to animate with a team of 500 artists.
