I also went old school taught my own kids how to safely handle firearms at an early age. Out here there are things that will bite and attack them, so we stay armed. Not the children, they only get to shoot when we have a range day, but they are also never outside alone. I took them hunting with plastic rifles when they were too little to understand that it wouldn't harm anything and all the noise they made ensured the animals were safely scared away but to this day they believe they have hunted for years.
