Computers in the 1960s and 1970s were mainly designed to crunch numbers and manipulate text. With the advent of graphical user interfaces, and the ability to display pictures and full-motion video, more memory was needed. Another factor is the Internet. Because of Internet access, computers now need more software to guard against viruses, and web browsers also store a lot of material on our computer's hard drives, such as previously used URLs and website photos.
