I've had this happen, I proceeded to, rather loudly, clear my throat and stare incredulously

One of the many "god isn't real but we want to pretend he is" coping mechanisms religions developed over the centuries. Participate in a real thing then sprinkle make believe on top of that.

Which of course is preferable to the ones who hurt themselves and others doing things that would actually require a real god somewhere in the process.
