You can if you want to. That's up to you.

But there are some very fundamental differences between Stalin and Christian Nationalists like Hegseth.

The first is that atheism isn't a religion. Certainly, there are similarities; both are social constructs that provide a set of agreed upon rules for society to operate.

But Stalin didn't commit his atrocities and crimes in the name of atheism. He didn't justify his crimes and atrocities with atheism in mind. He didn't say I can't be held responsible because atheism forgives me. He never justified his actions because of his atheism.

He never appealed to an outside moral authority and claimed to be a servant of that authority.

Meanwhile, Nationalists like Hegseth will commit all sorts of crimes then make an appeal to that moral authority. Hegseth cheated on all of his wives. All of them. He has been accused of sexually assaulting one woman, while he was cheating on Wife #2 with Future Wife #3 (who was pregnant with his kid before they got married).

Hegseth claims to be a flawed conduit of the divine and should be forgiven for his mistakes yet seems to keep making the same mistakes again and again and again.

Does he think that because god will forgive him that he is not guilty of his sins?
Christians do not justify misdeeds with their faith- the opposite in fact.

Most assuredly, yes. It's baked into the system. Did something horrible? Just ask for forgiveness.

Cheated on your 1st wife? No problems. Cheated on your 2nd wife with your future 3rd wife? Sexually assaulted a 4th one?

It's okay, because women are meant to serve men and all you gotta do is ask for forgiveness. And if you're an Evangelical, you just ask Jesus for forgiveness in your personal relationship.

Well thats not how it works at all. Repentance without a change of heart is worthless.

Then think about Matthew 6:5-6 and how Hegseth opened up his confirmation hearing with how faithful and pious he is?

Then you have an understanding of Christian Nationalism. IT's not about being a good person or even following the teachines of the Bible. IT is 100% about using the symbols and words of the Christian religion to do whatever it is they want to do and to remain in power.

I cant argue with you about proclaiming oneself as "good" is indeed foolish and wrong. But I would hesitate to say that Christian nationalism is about power- while there certainly are people who would use it that way im sure. And he did only say that he prays every morning and tell us what he prays for, which is helpful because there are many people who do not have the ideals that christians should have.
