Depends when you check em, when you check the box, it would usually just count 5 notifs, usually if you have less than 5, you'd lose them all, but if you have more notifs, there will be some extra that won't be viewed unless you check the "View All" option, which will show 20 notifs (which will obviously loose your streak or record, whatever you're doing)
All in all, if you're trying to get a high number for no reason but to see how many notifs you can achieve, then you would have to be mod of multiple streams, cause a bit of mayhem, or you could not visit the site until a long period of time, which let's be honest, is a boring experience, but the challenge would be tempting for some.
