in 2006, it was relegated to the status of dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU

the reason is because of its low mass, and not its size.
If it was denser, it could've been counted as a planet.
A planet needs to only be a large object, needs to be spherical and have a clear orbit (which is why mass counts)

Interesting. How do they measure mass? Isn't mass a measure of weight?
1 up, 4d,
1 reply
Kinda, but mass is just how close the atoms are to each other. When you feel the gravity of the Earth, you're actually feeling the gravity of every atom in space, the ones further away affect you less. When all the atoms are closer together, they weigh more, and have a stronger gravity. Pluto wasn't dense enough to clear its orbit, which means if Pluto was denser, it could've been considered a planet.

Now time to wait until someone comments, "I aint readin allat"

I want to learn...what is meant by "clear its orbit?"
1 up, 4d,
1 reply
getting rid of asteroids in its orbit by either flinging them out or crashing into them
0 ups, 3d,
1 reply
Ohhh! Ok, can you explain how they fling them out?
1 up, 3d,
1 reply
A planet's gravity pulls them in circles, slowly speeding the object up, until it leaves the orbit! The moon also does this, but only 1 inch (2,5 cm) a year!
0 ups, 3d,

Ok, good. I was considering gravity was the cause.
.
Now, do you mean the moon speeds up an object but only so much that the object moves an inch further out of orbit per year?
1 up, 3d,
1 reply
No, the Earth speeds the moon up so it leaves the orbit 1 inch a year.
0 ups, 3d
What the?! So the moon gets farther away from Earth every year?

I think any of us interested in this stream is smart. I don't think an emoji with glasses is offensive.

I want someone to call me a nerd! I would wear that badge so freakin proudly!! There are way too many non-nerds, if you get my meaning.

well most people say nerd as a negative thing

That's because most people prefer to stay ignorant of all truth. It is easier to be ignorant. Those people want to keep others down at their level. Please! Always push against the normative. Be brave! Be brainiacs! We need more of us in this world.
1 up, 3d
correct! I have never seen anyone use this word except for when making fun of brits

no i was messing around, i actually love space

Yeah, The moon does get further away every year! It would take 12 years for a foot.
It would take 63,360 years for 1 mile and 63 MILLION years for 1,000 miles. If the Earth somehow survived the sun in a couple billion years, then the moon would get 2 times further away in 15,133,852,800 years or LONGER THAN THE UNIVERSE HAS EXISTED

Do planets move farther away from the sun?
1 up, 2d,

Yes, but even less than the moon.

Hmm. That's extremely interesting. So how far would the earth have to move farther from the sun to have an affect on climate?

well, the goldilocks zone is 120 million km wide, so as long as Earth is in that space, humans can actually live

There's a lot of terms for people who study space. Good. I'll stick with quantum physics. I wanted to go into zoology but I was told I didn't have enough science on my high school transcript. Science is so fun!

Again with the male-ness. It could be feminine now a days. But I already know you'll site why it was named Jupiter to begin with.
