You're right about the danger if we're all thrown back on mixing up our own medicine based on myths. And that sounds like a terrifying and terrible experience.
The recipe given in this verse is just dirt in water with evil thoughts. If it worked at all it would be either as a nocebo or because the woman got some sort of parasitic infection from the floor sweepings. The Bible is a poor resource for actual science and medicine.
