The 14th-century Arab historian and sociologist Ibn Khaldun famously documented this phenomenon in his masterwork, the Muqaddimah. He devoted an entire chapter to it, titled "Most of the scholars in Islam have been non-Arabs (Ajam)." He noted that while the religion and language were Arab, the intellectual and scientific heavy lifting was predominantly done by Persians and mostly non-Arabs.
