yea that was infuriating
Rian Johnson basically was like "let's take everything you expected from Force Awakens and blow it to hell".
Bro legit said he considers it artistic creativity to piss off 50% of a fandom.
And JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson are the absolute worst combination to make a series with. JJ Abrams tells stories with mystery boxes, which means he doesn't reveal everything he's planned right away (meaning stuff is happening offscreen but it's planned into the story) and you have to wait for the next installments to find out the truth behind everything (which is getting old and boring but at least it's a style). Rian Johnson tells stories by absolutely TNTing expectations. He goes about storytelling like communists go about government: "tear everything down and make your own chaotic system". Mix that with JJ Abrams and you're going to get a story that was intended to land somewhere, and then it will end up meandering off into nonsenseville with the intent of pissing you off. It's like a plane that is supposed to land in Tokyo, but gets hijacked and gets lost on a heinous island and runs into a few towers on the way. Subverting expectations is good for a story, but it has to make sense. What he did with TLJ was such nonsensical BS that it was essentially unfixable no matter who directed the 3rd one unless you scrapped it and started over. Imagine if LOTR movies were directed by Peter Jackson, Rian Johnson, and then Peter Jackson again. Rian would mess up the second one so badly that Peter wouldn't be able to make a decent film with the third.
Given what Rian Johnson has directed, he should never be given a job again.
