Trump could've been invited too, but he didn't play his cards right.

If he did something illegal, there should be a criminal investigation, not an ethical one. Do to that my first instinct that it is a hit piece, rather than a proper report. If so we should see it to see who should be remove from the committee and government as a whole. That of course require the thing to be vetted rather than just being released.

if he's not an ethical person, he shouldn't be in government, let alone AG. the Ethics Committee exists for a reason. when someone from your party is being investigated, don't assume it's a 'hit piece'. if it is, further investigation should exonerate the accused. if it isn't, the country deserves to know.

He's being investigated for illegal activity by the ethics committee, if they have evidence of such he should be criminally charged, this makes me think they have nothing. And you're innocent until proved guilt, not suspect until exonerated. So investigation are not meant to exonerate, so it is an unlikely occlusion even for those that did no wrong.

well the committee isn't a court, they're a regulating body of the House. their job is to investigate. they find facts, not prove guilt or innocence. if the facts implicate him in crimes, the DOJ or relevant state judiciary would take it from there.

They can turn evidence over to the FBI, and he resigned after being selected by Trump for AG. The report only suddenly became important again when it could be used against him.

Trump can't select people for cabinet positions, he can only nominate them. nominees normally hold on to their day jobs until they've been confirmed by the Senate. not everyone is confirmed.

That's nitpicking my wording, and my usage of select fits. Actual nomination will occur later.

you guys really are extremely sensitive. my point is the same: Gaetz isn't AG until he's confirmed and confirmation isn't guaranteed. he's either foolish for resigning straightaway or he made a deal to resign if the report remains secret.

Calling me sanative doesn't negate that you're nitpicking, it is normal for the report not be released is he isn't part of the senate. It is also unusual to say in the congress while prepping for a position in another branch of government, even when not confirmed yet. Add to that he as been investigated by the FBI for these charges already, meaning your not holding yourself to your own standard that the investigation would exonerate him.

This adds up to the report being used as a weapon rather than being done for reasons of ethics.

the FBI not recommending criminal charges does not necessarily mean that Gaetz is entirely innocent. more importantly, the House would be interested in evidence of both criminal activity and any unethical behavior. i'm not saying you're wrong, but to me it looks like a called-for investigation and an untimely resignation. hopefully we'll know sooner rather than later.

The criminal activity is the behavior he's facing the ethical investigation over. You threw your own standard aside as soon as it didn't fit what you wanted. And the ethics investigation didn't just happen, it's been years long and a FBI agent was convicted of misbehaver in the probe. This hung over Matt's head for years and only suddenly became important again now when t could be used to hurt him again.

why did Gaetz resign from Congress before being confirmed as AG? that doesn't smell right.

"If you don’t know about the Matt Gaetz story, it’s fascinating. There was a FBI investigation into somebody who Matt Gaetz knows, that person ended up pleading guilty. But the department of Justice and the FBI really wanted to get Matt Gaetz, not the other guy.

Former department of Justice official met with the father of Matt Gaetz, and tried to extort him for $25 million dollars. The local FBI office told his father to wear a wire… which he did.

This resulted in the arrest and conviction of Stephen Alford for extortion. The former DOJ official who met with his father on behalf of Alford was never mentioned.

Alford in conjunction with this former DOJ official wanted Gaetz to plead guilty, and if he did they promised him a pardon.

This was all happening while the FBI was probing Matt Gaetz for s*x trafficking. Of course charges were never filed. And he was CLEARED of all wrongdoing.

But you know what’s really ironic, the subject of the ethics complaint is a 17-year-old girl that Matt Gaetz supposedly slept with.

It’s so strange because that’s exactly the charge that the FBI cleared him of.

They don’t have a crime, they have a girl who is three degrees of separation from someone in the FBI who is now making allegations even though the FBI couldn’t prosecute Gaetz for this criminally.

Do you know who has extensive ties to the ethics committee in the House of Representatives? I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that it’s Kevin McCarthy. Kevin McCarthy has spent the entire time since getting ousted by Matt Gaetz for being a horrible speaker trying to take him down.

Again, total coincidence, not a plot to destroy one of the biggest fighters in Congress."
