to what is happening in our world today
an Awakening
to the promise of a different tomorrow. in all the years of this nation
men have beaten down men
broken their hearts
and ripped at their souls
taken from them the very hope
that america gives
but soon, very soon
america will rise
and awaken from its slumber
rise to face the day
with a new perspective
rise and shine like
never before
when that day arrives
when the man rises up out of his bed
and faces his past
when he knows he can no longer
hide his crimes
his inhumanity to others
when he sees himself
for what he truly is
despicable; he will face down that ugliness
he will face himself in the mirror
he will face the truth
and the truth will help him awaken his own heart
awaken his soul to the humanity
the humanity he has neglected
to the brotherhood he surrendered to his hatred
and he will leave that hatred
and that neglect
and that past behind
he will become a new man
fresh from the corn fields
fresh with a new heart
ready to see a new day
ready to be a new man
ready to live and let live.
