My current method just feels a little limited when it comes to making the character look in a particular direction

Tip: Just add a line to the top of the eye to act as an eyelid and position the eye underneath it to where you want
You can do this when you specifically want to show where the eyes are looking and just not use it when you don't need it because it's one line
