Throughout the last hundred years or more we have seen our sons and now our daughters fight and die for causes that were no concern to us. Woodrow Wilson did it because he owed favors to certain war hawks like Firestone, Ford, Carnegie, Rockefeller, etc who saw Germany threatening exports out of Belgian colonies in Africa. Roosevelt poked the bear with Germany long before Japan decided to attack Pearl Harbor against German advice. LBJ did it in Vietnam and made a fortune in helicopter sales to the army. Dick Cheyne did it also.
