Not particularly difficult to grasp - slogans become acronyms become monikers, especially when those acronyms become synonymous with the movement and are commonly used by the adherents to adorn their bodies, vehicles, and homes.

It's how we came to know what had been the German Workers' Party in 1919 as the Nazis by their acronym and swastika fetish a little over a decade later.
