Multiple sapce marine chapters have tried and failed. What it would take is a full crusade. or any factions full attention. But that won't happen if the tau continue being a mjnor annoyence rather than a threat

My money's on Farsight falling to Chaos and becoming a tau equivalent of either Horus Lupercal or Abbadon the Despoiler.
On the bright side chaos fire warriors might look something like this (imagine a black legion style)
