Communism is granting the state all power. At the root of it, you cannot do anything without state approval. Further, man is inherently corrupt and leadership will eventually seize control of the state for their own benefit. There is no freedom at all in being the state's chattel.
Many will argue for Anarchy. But it will rely on informal collectives to enforce varying interpretations of an individual's rights. Things get fuzzy around social anarchists, and the collective is going to fracture over all kinds of things. Still, it's way better than communism. At least the state does not own you.
Libertarianism is likely the most freedom a society can offer. It acknowledges Natural Rights that protect you from the interference of others and requires just enough government to enforce your ability to enjoy such rights. You can basically do whatever it is you want, so long as it does not injure somebody else. In return for giving up the power to injure others, you enjoy the maximum amount of rights that a society can offer you.
True freedom is probably ignoring any kind of society. It would be very difficult to live like that, though. If nothing else, some a-hole is going to wage war to exert power over you or take what you have.
