Names are proper nouns, and can be anything. Melinda is a real name, and even if it wasn't, people make up names all the time. Every name to ever exist was created at some point because someone was bored of the other options and decided to make their own. There is no such thing as a "naming fail," unless a name is illegal, harmful to the child (or others), or in any way inappropriate.
