Using "they" to refer to one person, while respectful in our modern society, technically is bad grammar. When referring to a character of unknown gender you are usually supposed to use he/her. While I prefer to use they, I will always use he/her just to make sure that my English teach doesn't screw over my grade

You're wrong. Very wrong. Singular they/them is older than singular you, so if you want someone to say "he or she", you should also tell them that "you" and "your" are bad grammar and they should use "thou" and "thy"
