What's wrong with paying more in taxes voluntarily? If enough people in one town pay more in taxes than necessary for the year, than maybe that town could skip income taxes next year. You don't earn respect by doing the bare minimum. You earn respect by going the extra mile.
Also, I don't think Jesus Christ would approve of George Washington and his followers starting a war with the British just because the British were taxing us too much (in the opinion of Americans at the time). Jesus Christ wanted us to lay down our arms and love each other. There's one disturbing unknown about the first battle of the American Revolution. When the British confronted the Americans at Lexington on April 19, 1775, which side pulled the trigger first? Was it the British or the Americans? If the British fired first, we Americans could claim self-defense (though we could have avoided the confrontation just by paying our taxes). But if we Americans fired first, that's not self-defense but premeditated murder.
Too many people define courage as "standing up for yourself and not taking other people's abuse/mistreatment/unfairness". There are several big problems with that:
1. A lot of people with too little knowledge/life experience see abuse/mistreatment/unfairness where it doesn't exist.
2. Even if there is legitimate abuse/mistreatment/unfairness, a lot of people react disproportionately, and become worse than the people they were standing up to.
3. Innocent bystanders who played no part in the abuse/mistreatment/unfairness get injured or even killed in the crossfire.
Too many people believe the most heroic thing you can do is destroy everyone who mistreats you. But the truth is, if you decide to destroy everyone who mistreats you or is unfair to you, you see people as enemies who are really your friends, and you risk destroying those who are or who could have been your greatest allies, and ending up all alone.
