One of the reasons why Tolkien wrote the story was because he looked around at other countries like US with their Tall Tales and Pulp Magazines with their other worldly fantasy Sure Britain at the time had their own famous writes like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a few other but none of them were fantasy based. Tolkien felt that was odd given Britain's rich history of myths and legends. So he created a new mythology from the ground up. He was the first writer of renown to create distinct languages(Elven and Dwarf) for the characters he made.
