How do you draw everything so round and soft looking

Part of it is my art style, another might be the tools I use. I use a very round brush, so there's no pixely edges, and I use a thicker pen as well to make things more cartoony. I also take a lot of inspiration from things like rubber hose cartoons and steven universe, which have rounder styles.

Eyes

Uhhh how to draw them??
I have a couple different ways. My most iconic style is the upside-down U eyes. I also have the scribble eyes I do for like, crying and stuff. I do dot eyes sometimes. Usually all of these have more oval shapes to them rather than true circles. If I'm doing fanart, I'll usually copy the style so it fits the character better (if the eyes are a distinct feature of the character)

And the invert U works in pixel art ! Tyy

They're usually pretty messy haha, I do quick lines with various colors to help me see each part, and then I'll do smooth lineart on another layer.

How the heck do I make faces

Use the cross method to plan where the eyes go and where the face is pointing, and put the features on. I'm not sure how to help past that, since everyone's style is different...

I just really struggle with making my characters have a lot of emotion

I see. I've always been naturally good at that, so I'm not sure where to start... try making lots of different faces and feeling how your face moves, and look in the mirror as well. Learn the simple cartoon rules of expressions from the 20s and 30s, how face shape can help communicate emotion, as well as eyes and mouths. do practice drawing faces with only eyes or only mouths, so you can see how important the different parts are to each emotion. I hope that helps!

I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil lol, I just got better over time! I'm not sure if I had any specific inspiration at first... There are a few things that were very important to my art journey, though: When I was 9-11, I was really into Warriors, and used Scratch.mit.edu, so I drew a lot of cats in that one specific style, yk. Then, when I was 12, Portal 2, where I drew a TON of fanart, all as cats of course. This helped me develop facial expressions and posing more. And third, the Hazbin Hotel pilot came out when I was 13, and I made a ton of fanart for that, which helped my skill in drawing humans n stuff. Those are the things that helped me the most I think.

Hi. I can't download that onto my android tablet. Do you have another suggestion? I want to start using a program & don't know what's best. Can't get sketchbook either.

I don't know, sorry. I've only ever used a computer to draw.

Well, thanks for replying back. I'm going to learn. I was wondering how some people on this stream were making some drawings.

Hands
How to draw them

I'm not very good at realistic hands- but it's okay, because I have a very cartoony art style! I draw sorta mickey mouse hands. I usually start with a circle for the palm, then draw sausage-y ovals for fingers.

Thanks!
I dont draw realistic hands so cartoony ones are fine

I love your art! <333 how does your art look so simple but so detailed at the same time? it looks like a pro drew this even tho it's simple and cute...

Thank you! I guess I just focus on the most important details. I don't worry too much about things like fabric textures, intricate designs, etc, I keep things in big, simple shapes. I take a lot of inspiration from Western cartoons like Steven universe, which influences a lot of my choices as well.

posing
[deleted]
1 up, 1y
I'm gonna be so honest I have a lot of trouble with this lol. If I have a very specific pose in mind, it's usually easier, or if you are doing a comic and want to do an action, but dynamic "model" posing, where if you're just drawing a character standing, is a lot harder. I usually go to Pinterest for ideas, and I'll use a reference and sketch out the skeleton of a pose, before adjusting proportions to my style. Also, even if you don't have a mirror, acting out the pose you want to draw helps a lot, because you can feel how the body should be shaped. Kinda like how artists make facial expressions when they draw.

Shading
[deleted]

I don't do much intense or directional shading, but basic soft light shading is pretty easy.
I do cell-style, which means the shadows have hard edges rather than blended edges.
I usually just pick places that would touch or wouldn't be in direct light, like the neck/chin, inner arms/legs, bottom parts of hair, etc. And I normally shade in two different ways:
1- use a color slightly darker and more saturated, and color each part of the shading separately (better if you have a simpler drawing or want to be more precise with your color choices) or
2- use a dark color (blue, purple, black, depends on the vibe) and shade everywhere I need to, then turn the opacity down to whatever looks good.
