It's still looting - just a misdemeanor. I'm not sure if this was as much a Gascon thing - as an FBI-protected thing.
They were creating the impression (fostered by Trump) that BLM was engaged in lawlessness... But if that had been the case - the organization would be subject to RICO, like the Cop City and J6 protestors. It was simultaneously tarnishing the pushback against unaccountable police violence, as being inherently violent - and dividing America along racial and political lines. It probably hurt Trump's "Law and Order" image simultaneously.
The BLM organization (controlled/captured by the Democrats) has to be separated from a popular and common sentiment. StolenLives.org and October22.org were each old enough to vote, before BLM stopped being a #. But unlike BLM, they could hardly get a column inch of coverage - even when attacked by a Police Riot - as happened in Long Beach and LA.
