In April 2016, Elon Musk invited the
people of India to preorder the upcoming Tesla Model 3 for $1000, but then backed out
due to tariffs - leaving those who pre-ordered
to try to get their money back somehow. Although the tariffs could double the
price of vehicles, they could have reduced the amount to 15% if they were willing to open a factory in India; but chose not to do so.
In the meantime other companies have been selling EVs in India at lower prices. It would be
very hard for Tesla to break into the market now.
