Ériu, aka Erin or Eire, was one of the Tuatha dé Danaan family of Gods. Ériu was exploring the seas with her sisters Fotla & Banba when They found a large island untouched by civilization, & made it their holy land. Centuries later humans called the Milesians came looking for a homeland. Erinn decided to approach them with tolerance, saying that Her family would not oppose their occupation if they respected Her enough to name the land after Her. These early Druids happily agreed to the request; to this day the island nation that they founded is still the Land of Eire -- Ireland for short.
