Thomas only had about a year of experience with guns via a shooting club membership.

Yeah, I know. But Thomas had a full sniper rifle and Oswald just had a bolt action 22 I think

Experience and having time to plan can change things quite a lot. Comparing Lee Harvey Oswald to Thomas is like comparing a night in a Marriot hotel room to falling asleep behind a dumpster in some random alley. Even if you have a great gun, if you don’t know what you are doing, it's not going to help much.
